While the AFC West may not be the strongest division in the NFL right now, the song remains the same as it’s ‘anything goes’ during inter-division play. Some of the wildest back and forth games in NFL history have happened when two of these four teams face each other.
Tonight’s Thursday Night Football matchup has all the ingredients for another wild one. The reigning Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos ride down to San Diego in what many perceive as a ‘must win’ game for San Diego, a team desperately searching for answers to their stadium initiative. Continuing to lose isn’t doing them any favors when it comes to swaying public opinion in their favor as it pertains to using public funds to replace their aging home.
Denver, coming off a stunning loss to the high flying Atlanta Falcons last week, is looking to get back on track as they continue marching toward their goal of repeating as league champions.
Denver leads the series all time 62-49-1, but have only beaten the Chargers three of the five times they’ve faced off with Gary Kubiak as their head coach. Kubiak won’t be on the sideline this week as he deals with a health issue, but defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who filled in for Kubiak in the same capacity when thy were both in Houston, is more than capable of leading the team.
No matter who’s on the sidelines, expect this one to have plenty of fireworks and water cooler topics for tomorrow.
